Psychoeducational Assessments Calgary

Gain A New Perspective

Unlock Your Child's Learning Potential

When your bright child struggles with reading, math, or other academic skills despite their obvious intelligence, it can feel confusing and heartbreaking. Maybe they work twice as hard as their peers but still fall behind, or perhaps they’ve lost confidence and started avoiding schoolwork altogether. A psychoeducational assessment can uncover the hidden learning differences that may be blocking your child’s academic success.

At Alberta Family Psychology, our specialized psychoeducational assessments provide a complete picture of how your child learns best, identifying both strengths and challenges that impact academic performance. We go beyond simple test scores to understand your child’s unique learning profile and provide detailed recommendations that help teachers, parents, and students work together for academic success.

Students needing documentation for Individual Education Plans (IEPs)

Students with attention difficulties affecting their ability to learn and demonstrate knowledge

Comprehensive Evaluation That Reveals How Your Child Learns Best

Our assessment begins with detailed interviews about your child’s developmental, medical, and educational history. We gather information from parents, teachers, and previous assessments to understand the full picture of your child’s learning experience. This background helps us identify specific areas to evaluate and ensures we’re asking the right questions.

The testing phase includes comprehensive evaluation of intellectual abilities, academic achievement in reading, writing, and mathematics, processing speed, working memory, and executive functioning skills. We also assess areas like phonological processing, visual-motor integration, and attention that can significantly impact learning. Testing is conducted in a supportive environment with breaks as needed to ensure your child performs at their best.

Following testing, we analyze results to identify learning strengths, challenges, and the specific pattern of abilities that defines your child’s learning profile.

What You Can Discover On The Other Side

Psychoeducational assessments focus specifically on learning and academic functioning, evaluating how cognitive abilities impact educational performance. They include detailed academic achievement testing and educational recommendations. Psychological assessments are broader and may include mental health, behavioral, or developmental concerns beyond learning.

We can conduct meaningful psychoeducational assessments starting around age 6, when children have had some exposure to formal academic instruction. However, we can assess pre-academic skills in younger children when there are concerns about school readiness or developmental delays affecting learning.

Yes, our assessments provide the documentation needed for Individual Education Plans (IEPs), 504 plans, and other educational accommodations. We work closely with school teams and provide clear, specific recommendations that can be implemented in classroom settings.

Many gifted children also have learning differences (often called “twice exceptional” or “2e” learners). Our comprehensive approach can identify both intellectual giftedness and learning challenges, providing recommendations for educational programs that address both areas.

We provide a detailed feedback session to explain findings and recommendations. We can help you communicate results to your child’s school, connect you with appropriate resources, and provide referrals for additional services like tutoring or therapy when beneficial. We’re also available for follow-up consultation as needed.
